WhatsApp is testing an in-app document scanning function for Android devices, currently available to users enrolled in the beta program under version 2.25.19.21. The tool allows users to scan physical documents directly using the device camera, bypassing the need for third-party apps.

This new capability, previously introduced on iOS, is integrated into the document sharing section of the app. Users accessing the "Scan document" option will be directed to a live camera interface designed for real-time scanning.

The feature provides two scanning modes:

* Manual Mode: Lets users manually capture documents by tapping the shutter at the desired time.

* Automatic Mode: Recognizes document boundaries and captures the image without user input.

Once scanned, the image is processed locally and automatically converted into a PDF file. This file can then be sent through both private and group chats within the app.

WhatsApp uses Android’s native APIs to handle scanning and file conversion on-device, ensuring the process remains secure and efficient. The resulting PDFs are safeguarded by end-to-end encryption, maintaining WhatsApp’s privacy standards.

This development underscores WhatsApp’s strategy of enhancing user experience by embedding essential tools within the platform itself. The company aims to reduce dependence on external applications while reinforcing security.

A phased rollout beyond beta users is anticipated soon, extending the feature to a wider Android audience.
